Brian David Mitchell is a homeless monk and the self proclaimed angel from heaven that was sent to Earth to serve the penniless and correct the Mormon Church by refurbishes its fundamental values. Along with his wife Wanda Barzee, he is charged of kidnapping the 14-year-old Elizabeth Smart and holding her imprisoned for nine months.
Brian David Mitchell was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on 18th October, 1953. He was the third of six children born into a then stern household chiefly estranged from the LDS Church but with deep roots in Mormon traditions. As per neighbors, the family was described as decent people, though to some extent odd, and Brian was known as the black sheep of the family. Brian David Mitchell had a worried background.
Brian David Mitchell is a panhandler from Utah who in March 2008 was accused for the 5th June, 2002 kidnapping of Elizabeth Smart from her bedroom at the age of 14 years. Mitchell, a spiritual extremist who suffers from a delusional disorder, has twice been found incompetent in court, and in April 2009 undergo a psychological evaluation to determine whether or not he is capable to help in his own security. Forensic psychologist Dr. Michael Wellner is listed to present his findings in court on June 18, 2009.
Dale Kimball, U.S. District Court Judge abided about a half hour of Mitchell's soft hymns before ordering him out of the courtroom.
Kimball also rejected Mitchell's request to don the robes, he was wearing when he was arrested with Smart, nine months after the girl vanished from her bedroom.
Jury selection began Monday in U.S. District Court for the former street monk charged in the 2002 kidnapping. In March 2008 on federal charges of kidnapping and unlawful transportation of a minor across state lines Brian David Mitchell was accused. If convicted, he could spend the rest of his life in prison.
Federal prosecutors moved to take over the case in 2008 after a similar state court case mired over questions about Mitchell's mental health.
Smart was 14 when she was kidnapped at knifepoint from her home on June 5, 2002. Now 22, Smart is expected to return from Utah from helping a task for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in France to testify against Mitchell. As part of a capability hearing for Mitchell, Smart testified for the first time last year saying that within hours of her kidnapping she was forced to become Mitchell's polygamous wife and endured frequent rapes and other mistreatment throughout her captivity.
Some 600 prospective jurors were called, after exclusion based on destitution or responses to a 42 page juror questionnaire, about 220 remain and will be questioned in person by attorneys for both sides. Jury selection could take several weeks, and the trial is expected to last into December.
Brian David Mitchell spent time in a Juvenile Detention facility, after divulging himself to a younger girl while in his teens and in Juvenile Detention he met insalubrious characters. The consequential stigma from his time in custody further estranged him from his family and community. Before they spilt up, they have two children, until his wife remarried Brian gaining custody of his children. To avert the children from returning to their mother, Mitchell then fled to New Hampshire.
Soon Mitchell cleaned up his life after, returned the children and became lively in the LDS Church, afterward remarrying a woman who then had three from her previous marriage. Further the new couple had two children.
Mitchell's Childhood Years:
Brian Mitchell gives the impression like a normal child, involved in the cub scouts and Little League. His mother Irene was a schoolteacher and his father Shirl was a social worker. Shrill, by his own admittance had a questionable perspective on healthy child rearing. Shirl attempted to teach him about sex by showing him sexually overt pictures in a medical journal when Brian was eight. Other sexually oriented books were brought into the home and left within reach of the latchkey kid who had abundance of free time on his hands.
Brian Mitchell Begins to Isolate:
To teach his son a few lessons in life, Shrill once attempted, by dropping the 12 year old Mitchell off in an unknown area of town, by instructing him to find his way home. Brain become more argumentative with his parents, as he got older and began to recoil into a world of isolation. He was promptly becoming the black sheep of the family.
Mitchell Exposes Himself to a Child:
Brian was found guilty approximately at the age of 16, of exposing himself to a child and sent to a juvenile delinquent hall. The stigma linked to his crime estranged Brian among his peers. Urging between Brian and especially his mother were stable. The verdict was made to send Brian to live with his grandmother. After the move, very soon Brian dropped out of the school and started using drugs and alcohol on a regular basis.
Mitchell Cleans Up His Act:
In 1980 Mitchell's life changed after his brother returned from a religious mission and the two began to talk. Brian stops his drug and alcohol use and became active in the Latter Day Saints church. He was married to his second wife, Debbie Mitchell, by 1981. She had three daughters from a previous marriage. Further the new couple had two more children soon after their marriage.
Mitchell's Abuse in His Second Marriage:
It did not take long for the marriage to show the symbols of sprain and Brian's two children were sent to foster homes. Debbie alleged that Mitchell turned from gentle to controlling and abusive, dictating what she could wear and eat and intentionally tried to terrify her. His interest in Satan troubled her, though Mitchell claimed he was learning about his enemy. In 1984 Mitchell filed for divorce, asserting Debbie was aggressive and cruel to his children and panic that she was turning them against him.
Accusations of Sexual Abuse:
Debbie called authorities within a year of their partition to report her anxiety that Mitchell might have sexually abused their 3-year-old son. A caseworker for the Division of Child and Family Services could not directly link Mitchell to sexual abuse but suggested that future visits with the boy and Mitchell be oversee. Within the year Debbie's daughter charged Mitchell of sexually abusing her for four years. Debbie reported the misuse to the LDS leaders but was recommended to drop it.
Mitchell and Barzee Marry:
Mitchell married Wanda Barzee on the same day when he got divorce from Debbie. Barzee was a 40 year old divorcee with six children, who she left with her ex-husband when she left the marriage. Barzee's family was accepting of 32 year old Mitchell though they found him to be weird. After their marriage, a few of Barzee's children moved in with the newlyweds but found their new home to be more and more weird and ominous because of Mitchell's unconventional behavior.
Abuse and Strange Behavior Concerns Family:
Mitchell was working as a die harvester and was energetically involved with the LDS church. But relatives and friends were aware of his propensity toward anger often unleashed on Barzee. He was becoming more and more excessive both in his spiritual views and his interaction with fellow LDS members. Even his depiction of Satan during temple custom had become too extreme to the point where he was asked by the elders to tone it down.
Speaking to Angels:
Mitchell woke one of Barzee’s sons one night and told him they just spoke to angels. After that Mitchell home start to change radically so much so that Barzee’s children, unable to take the invariable proselytizing, moved away. Mitchell changed his name to Emmanuel, by 1990s and stopped his association with the church, and presented himself to others as a prophet of God whose thinking were etched out by his prophetic visions.
Emmanuel and Wife God Adorneth:
Mitchell had taken on a Jesus like look with a long beard and dressed in his white dressing gown. Barzee, now calling herself "God Adorneth," stayed by his side like a dotting follower and the two were ordinary fixtures along the downtown streets. Families of the duo had little to do with them and old friends who happened upon them were treated as unfamiliar person with a panhandlers greeting and an extended hand.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports nine judges candidates have been selected for trial of Brian David Mitchell, charged of kidnapping and raping 14 year old Elizabeth Smart eight years ago. Broad media coverage of Smart’s kidnapping and recovery caused many to be well-known with the case. Those called for possible jury duty should be able to make a neutral decision based on proof, personal feelings about sexual abuse, balanced by media reporting and a possible security of insanity. 32 potential jurors are needed for the applicant pool, from which the final panel will be selected.
