History was made in AT & T Park on Friday July 10 by Jonathan Sanchez. After three weeks left -hander Jonathan Sanchez came back on Friday night to become the first Giant to throw a no-hitter since John Montefusco in 1976. Sanchez hit out 11 batters as San Francisco beat the San Diego Padres 8-0 on Friday night.
Jonathan Sanchez had a perfect game going in the eighth inning but San Diego's Chase Headley reached base on an error by third baseman Juan Uribe with one out. It was the 13th no-hitter in franchise history and first in the major leagues this season.
Sanchez said after the game “It’s awesome. I can’t believe I just threw a no-hitter after I’ve been struggling the whole year, hopefully, next start it will get better.”
Sanchez said he had made some adjustments with pitching Coach Dave Righetti during his two weeks as a reliever.
Sanchez had started the year in the Giants rotation, but he was sent to the bullpen last month after going 4-10 with a 5.54 ERA. He returned to the rotation after Randy Johnson was placed on the disabled list earlier this week.
Sanchez's father Sigfredo had flown there from Puerto Rico for the game. It was the first time his father had seen him start a major league game in person.
Johnson was the first to congratulate Sanchez, the last major leaguer to throw a perfect game, and Righetti, who tossed a no-hitter for the New York Yankees on July 4, 1983.
