During a news conference, Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley had given a speech on Monday, June 28, 2010, in Chicago. Officials are fighting back hard, following the Supreme Court’s ruling in McDonald v. Chicago, which struck down the city’s ban on handguns. The city “will publicly propose a new ordinance very soon,” in the words of Mayor Richard Daley, which will restrict gun possession without violating the court’s decision.
By Monday's broadly expected Supreme Court decision, Daley said he is disappointed that Americans have a right to own a gun for self-defense anyplace but promised to shortly push for a new ordinance regulating handguns in the city. He strained that while the city's 28-year-old ban remains in place awaiting a federal appeals court reconsiders its ruling, it's clear it will be upturned.
After the court ruled in 2008 in DC v. Heller, that Washington D.C.’s ban on guns was unconstitutional, the suit in Chicago was filed later than some days. For a slew of lawsuits, that decision opened up the door since the court was not clear whether their decision applied to cities and states.
The Supreme Court justices decided 5-4 that the Heller decision could be integrated to the states by means of the due process clause in the 14th Amendment in McDonald v. Chicago.
Daley said in a press release, “We’re working to rewrite our ordinance in a reasonable and responsible way to protect our 2nd Amendment rights and protect Chicagoans from gun violence”. Daley also told that Gun violence is a Chicago problem, as well as it is an American problem and, it will carry on until we comprehend that there are reasonable and responsible steps we can take as a nation to help end the pointless gun violence that reckless people bring on our friends and family.
For two reasons, the Second Amendment exists.
1. The founders knew that law enforcement couldn’t defend each person against attack — unless they created a police state that would abolish liberty everlastingly. To arm themselves, they encouraged people, an important move in frontier areas particularly, where the writ of law didn’t run very strongly. At investigating crimes after they occur, the police are very good but not in providing personal defense, which isn’t their job.
2. For those in power to seize property and liberty without due process of law, arming the populace makes it much more difficult. When only the government and the criminals have guns, they both can dictate at will without fear of opposition as Daley aptly demonstrated. Just wield a gun at him, when a reporter asks a hard question, and then later laugh it off as a joke.
Executive director of Gun Owners of America, Larry Pratt, told The Daily Caller that while the principle that the 2nd Amendment now applies to the whole country is significant, the battle is far from over. Also Pratt said, “The challenge now is to attack licensing schemes that are almost just as bad as a ban,” he added, “Now, most people just give up or can’t afford it … Chicago is very likely to do what was done in D.C., which is pretty outrageous.”
