A new leisure destination in the north of Singapore, Woodlands Waterfront attracted over 2,500 people when it opened its first phase on 23rd May, 2010. The estimated cost is $19 million to build this park and will be completed by the end of this year. The Park was designed with community-based events in mind. It will be opened in three phases. The playground with a two-storey Skywalk for children and youth is one of the attractions in the park.
A group director for Conservation and Development Services of the Urban Redevelopment Authority, Mr. Ler Seng Ann said, "The project was actually planned in close collaboration with grassroots … and many of the facilities that we have provided were for community purposes". The URA said the main features are already in place although only one-third of the park area has been opened.
A refurbished 400-metre jetty -a reminder that the park used to be occupied by warehouses will be featured by the waterfront park, which overlooks the Straits of Johor. The Woodlands Waterfront’s remaining six hectares will be opened by the end of the year, which include features like the Catilevered Promenade, nature area, trails and green spaces.
The Woodlands Waterfront will be linked to the nearby Admiralty Park and the park connector alongside Woodlands Centre Road and Admiralty West when the construction of park is fully completed. 1.5 km of the 150 km-Round Island Route will be appended by the Woodlands Waterfront which permits seamless strolling, jogging or cycling around Singapore.
Woodlands Waterfront was designed according to the feedbacks received by URA from local residents with the aim for better developments to cater to the community's needs. Chief executive of URA, Cheong Koon Hean said, “The Woodlands Waterfront is part of URA's plan to continually enhance the living environment by capitalizing on natural assets to improve the quality of life”. He added that “it will bring the scenic northern coastline closer to people and offer more choices, particularly for residents in the north.”
